A Shared Vision: Why Social Norms?
Social norms are the unwritten rules which govern our societies, actions and behaviors. Social norms are the fabric of society; they confirm what people should do, and limit what people cannot do.
Over the past few decades, social norms have become an essential component for most behavior change research and practice. As such, creating and sustaining a community of experts well-versed in researching, addressing, and monitoring social norms has become essential in furthering the field of social and behavior change.
The Social Norms and Agency Learning Collaboratives have been a backbone of growth within this field over the past decade. They encourage individuals and organizations to think deeper about their programming, research and policy decisions, to ensure norms are being considered.
Composed of both organizations and individuals, regional members have diverse professional backgrounds across health and development sectors. Together, the network of regional Social Norms and Agency Learning Collaboratives envisions a world where partnerships, knowledge sharing, and thought leadership converge to ensure sustained equity, social justice, and health for all people.
